LUCIS VIA PRESENTS THE INAUGURAL FUN NUN BOWL!

First EVER!
Fun Nun Bowl Thursday February 16, 2012 6-8pm - River Bowl Mount Pleasant

In support of the Daughters of St. Paul's Pauline Book and Media Lucis Via will be hosting our first ever Charity Bowling Tournament and here is how you can be involved:

$25 - Participate as a Bowler - This gets you 1.5 Hours of Bowling with Shoes, Dinner, and a chance to win some great prizes!
- Teams are 5 people each. Prizes will be given in several different categories (i.e. not just top scores), sign up as a team or we can fill in teams or put together individuals as necessary, food is buffet style and high quality,

$125 - Sponsor a Lane - Your name, company name, Parish name or whatever message you desire will be posted at your particular lane for the entire event. The participants will even be assigned to the lane by the name you choose to have on it.

At least $250 Sponsor the Entire Event - Prominently Displayed Banners and mentioning of these sponsors will be made during several announcements while the event is happening and in the thank you announcements that we will request to be placed in all the bulletins after this successful effort takes place.

Last by certainly not least - Show up! One of the big reasons for this event is to promote Catholic community here in Charleston and all of South Carolina. Even if you do not bowl or sponsor please come out to support the bowlers, sponsors and of course the Daughters of St. Paul! This should be an exciting first event of many and we look forward to seeing you out there!

Goal - Help to Raise $6,000 to pay for specifically the doors on the side of Pauline Book and Media that open up to the street. Literally and figuratively helping to open the doors to the education of all about our Catholic Faith. The Daughters of St. Paul mission is to spread the Gospel through all means of communication and the use of their building by several groups including Lucis Via has helped to build community and opportunity to Spread the Gospel to all people. God has blessed all of us to have the Daughters of St. Paul here in Charleston and now Lucis Via and all our friends are trying to in a little way assist with that Mission.

Exciting News!

With the beginning of 2012... Catheral Young Adults is Lucis Via - Catholic Young Adults of Charleston.

Quickly starting new studies all over the Charleston area and beyond, we are working to build a community of young adult Catholics all over South Carolina that can work together in service to God, His Church and His people. Lots of exciting things coming soon with the new Associate Director for Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Charleston starting her new job soon. Congrats to Valerie! She is going to be a passionate and strong leader for all those involved in the ministry.

Wednesday, November 9 7pm - Scripture Study, continuing our Study of Tobit finishing Chapter 2. Pauline Book and Media 243 King Street.

Sunday November 13 - Second Sunday of our bake sale to support the Thanksgiving Baskets at all Masses (8am 11:15am and 5:15pm). - Cathedral of St. John the Baptist 120 Broad Street.

Wednesday November 16 7pm - Wine and Words... Bring your favorite bottle of wine and be prepared to share in a Subject in Scripture and some small snack foods as we try a different approach to Wednesday night! Pauline Book and Media 243 King Street. Please use the side door.

Saturday November 19 8am- Thanksgiving Basket Distribution Morning, we will be putting together and delivering all the 50 Thanksgiving Baskets for this year to 50 families around the Charleston peninsula. We need all sorts of volunteers, laundry baskets and drivers to help make this large operation a success. All are welcome! Please contact Valerie Soop for more information. Sunday November 20 11am - A Special Event - Brunch for the Ladies - The Young Adult Men's Group will be hosting a special meal that morning for the women of the YAG and details will be given out in individual invitations. If interested as a guy to assist or as a lady to be an attendee please contact Jamiel Kadri, Nathan Valle, Jacob Whalen, John Erwin or Richard White. Invitations should be going out this week!

Wednesday November 23 7pm - A Special Pre Thanksgiving Event will take place for those still in town. More details to be announced. Location also to be announced!

All month event! - We are currently in the process of expanding to Mount Pleasant for a second night. Tuesday nights at 7pm at a location to be determined will be available beginning in Advent 2011... Starting the Catholic New Year off right! We are looking for a name that the Cathedral Young Adults downtown and the yet to be named group in Mount Pleasant can share so that we stay unified and working together in Charity, Social and Scripture Study events and opportunities. Please prayerfully consider and submit to the Cathedral YAG email or post to the Facebook page your thoughts, insights and suggestions. We will be meeting towards the end of the month to make a final decision! God has truly blessed all of us with the growth of this ministry and now we are ready to spread to offer more people the opportunity to be a part of it!

MUSC CHILDRENS HOSPITAL BREAKFAST - Saturday October 22, 2011

We will be serving breakfast for the children and their families at MUSC Children's hospital. 40 Days for Life - Going on now!
Thanks to the coordination of Ms. Anne Hobday, we have two great opportunities to offer our support to the pro life movement in Charleston. First is our weekly Thursday commitment to the prayer vigil taking place outside of the abortion clinic. For the next few Thursday evenings we will be out front offering peaceful prayer and a presence in opposition to the clinic from 4-8pm. The clinic is located at 1312 Ashley River Road. For more information please contact Anne or Richard. We had a great turnout for the first evening of prayer out there and look forward to even more as the weeks go on!

Happy 4th of July Everyone!

As we prepare to celebrate the birth of this great nation we are blessed to call home, hope your plans for July 4th are coming together and there is a lot of great things in store for you all. First, we have had a great start to summer thus far with so much more summer to enjoy. Second, this month we have an exciting set of opportunities and the core team is looking for some input and ideas!

Please send ideas and suggestions to the YAG email or post to the Facebook group some ideas dealing with the following:

Topics to Study - Each Study is beginning with a short 5 minute Apologetics moment lead by the Scripture Study leader that night, but the idea has been thrown around to do one night a month where the entire evening would be focused on a topic of Faith that helps our understanding and development as Catholics. No idea as with all questions will be a bad one in this case, so please share.

Charity Opportunities - Repeat and One Time. Who can we help in our lovely community of Charleston? Where is the need we can fill? What great ideas are out of the box that can make an impact on the physical and spiritual health of the Charleston area, maybe even the entire state of South Carolina and beyond?

Social Events - Big group and small groups. What is good in Charleston? What can we all do to bring us closer as a community? How can we involve all members of the Parish and Diocese possibly?

Why Catholic? Speakers - Who would you like to hear speak and what topics interest you to be spoken on? What examples of the Catholic Faith can we bring in to share various viewpoints and approaches? We have several spots available for next year's series which begins in September and will be the 4th Wednesday of every month with a break at Christmas time and then all the way through May 2012. So plenty of chances to setup great speakers.

Leaders - Are you or do you know someone who has a strong knowledge, passion and desire to grow in their faith and helps to inspire and work with others in all aspects of being Catholic? The Core Team is looking for some strong faithful young adults to lead in all areas from the social events, charity opportunities, Wednesday night's Scripture Study, the Women's and Men's Groups. Wherever you feel called to lead, please let us know and we will do what we can to get that opportunity.

As in all things, please keep all young adults in the Diocese and all Catholics, other Christians and the whole community of Charleston and South Carolina as a whole in your prayers. There has been much great progress being made, but so much work to be done. With a new Priest coming to the Cathedral and Sister Jane's replacement coming to Charleston in the fall, there is a lot of change ahead. So pray also that we remain steadfast and growing in our faith as individuals and as young adults at the Cathedral. God Bless each of you!

Cathedral Young Adult Group Retreat “Come Away…”

Basic Details… April 15th – 17th, 2011

- Open to any young adult (18-35) from anywhere in the Diocese of Charleston who is interested in joining a group of their peers, getting away to prepare themselves for Holy Week, leading into Easter!
- Camping on the shores of Lake Moultrie approximately 30-45 minutes from the Charleston area depending on where in the area you live. (Map will be provided)
- Two campground sites and a two bedroom villa (for the less outdoors inclined), showering and restroom facilities are available at the site - Costs of villa and sites were donated and are at no cost to those of us on this retreat.
-To participate in the coordinated meals by Mr. Jamiel Kadri is a donation of $20 – Deadline to let us know of participation is April 8th. Includes 5 total meals and is inclusive of limited drinks and some snacks.
- Retreat T-Shirts are $8 and can be ordered by emailing Cathedralyag@hotmail.com – Should be paid by April 10th.
- Please coordinate bringing tents with other participants or contact the Cathedral Young Adult Group and we can help you coordinate with others for a tent. Also let us know if you would prefer to stay in the villa.
- Please bring other camping, recreational/sports and fishing equipment, plus plenty of water!

Bagel Sandwich Breakfast – 8 a.m.
Tear down, clear out and clean up of Campsite and preparation for Mass - 9 a.m.
Depart for 11 a.m. Palm Sunday Mass at St. Philip Benizi in Moncks Corner - 10:15 a.m.

Also, if you are able to make it to any part of the retreat, but may not able to make it to all of it, we encourage you to join or leave at any point to participate in as much of the retreat as possible. MUSC Children's Hospital Lunch April 3!

Calling all Cathedral Young Adult Group members,

We have an awesome opportunity to offer lunch to the children and their families going through very challenging times at the MUSC Children's Hospital on Sunday, April 3 at 11am, serving lunch from 12 - 2 p.m. The theme we are going with is College Pride. Since college basketball's big games will be going on around that weekend, we are asking everyone who is participating to wear the colors of your college and show up to bring a spirited afternoon to a very grateful group of people. The food will be typical cookout items, the menu has yet to be finalized so please email us to give your suggestions! Father Babick's explanation of the changes coming in Advent 2010 was both insightful and brought to life many of the parts of the Mass that many today may take for granted. Our Young Adult Group is made up of several exceptional people. Justin Gaeta is definitely one of them. He's full of God's joy and he engages life every day. On the heels of a very long stay in India, Justin has many stories to tell. If you see him around say hello and ask him about his experience there. How old are you? 22 Where are you from originally? Director of Campus Ministry, Bishop England High School What do you do for fun and recreation? Beach, ultimate frisbee, surfing, boating, sailing Favorite books? Favorite authors? Shantaram, Kite Runner, Michael Crichton, Peter Kreeft Favorite Movie? Life Aquatic cracks me up every time I watch it. What has your journey of faith been like? Throughout most of high school, I would look for the easiest ways to get instant gratification. I went looking for this in alcohol, women, and drugs, but was left unsatisfied. So the next weekend I would go harder, more drinking, more drugs, see if that works. It didn't, and I was left questioning myself, who I was, what was I meant for. I really started searching for and developing my own faith when I was a senior in high school. It was a hard year for me with rejection from friends and feeling unsure about where I fit in. I really came into my own faith in college and found some really great friends who supported my spiritually. I have always been Catholic, but it wasn't until about my Sophomore year that I started diving deeper in my Catholic roots. There have been many speed bumps along my road of faith, and there will certainly be more ahead, but I strive each day to be more like Christ. Who is your Patron Saint? Saint Michael the Archangel. Whenever I am temped by the devil I ask for Saint Michael to defend me, and he always comes through. What's your favorite thing about being Catholic? The depth of the Faith in the Catholic Church, and the universality of the Church. We are everywhere! What do you enjoy about the young adult group? I love to see people my age embracing the Faith and the Catholic Church as I do. The Why Catholic? lectures are great as I get to learn new things and dive deeper in the spiritual world.

Know a family member or friend who wants to learn more or become Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), is a process for bringing into the Catholic Church both those who have never been baptized and those who were baptised in a non-Catholic Christian tradition. RCIA is also the best way for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed to prepare for that final Sacrament of Initiation. Every September, the cathedral begins a new RCIA class and invites everyone who would like to join the Catholic Church, be confirmed or is simply interested in learning about the teachings and customs of Catholic Christianity to come and join them. While classroom work is a part of the process, RCIA is more than a class; it is a gradual introduction to the customs, beliefs, practices and devotions of Catholicism. There is no obligation – only an opportunity to learn. Several members of our Young Adult Group are Catholic converts who went through RCIA! Our Reflection on Acts 15 – The Truth: The Holy Spirit, The Church, & Peter (The Pope)

Two weeks ago we studied Acts chapter 15. As part of the study we read about the first church council in history, The Council of Jerusalem, and saw how it is essentially the same as church councils have been throughout history, the most recent being The Second Vatican Council, which lasted from 1962 – 1965. Along with church councils, we looked at three biblical elements essential to them: The Holy Spirit, The Pope, & The Church. These three elements help us to know and answer, "what is the truth?". Though so much can be said about this topic, and so many important details should be added, this is simply an outline and logical structure to follow. Below are notes we discussed in our scripture study. Why? Why is this worth thinking about? It's worth thinking about because we are made to know the truth. We hunger for it. St. Paul says that God desires all men to come to the knowledge of the truth. But with so many differences within Christianity, and many different denominations all claiming to be right, which one can you really get the truth from? Hopefully this brief exploration will provide some guidance. The central issue we explored is the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the authority of the Church as portrayed in Acts 15: "It is the decision of the holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities...If you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right." – Acts 15:28–29. The Holy Spirit and "us" (here referring to Peter and the leaders of the Church) come to a decision which ensures those who obey "will be doing what is right". So let's see how it all comes together. The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit, whom Christ the head pours out on his members, builds, animates, and sanctifies the Church. She is the sacrament of the Holy Trinity's communion with men. – CCC 747 + "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth." – John 14: 15–17 + "I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name - he will teach you everything and remind you of all that (I) told you." – John 14: 25–26 + "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth." – John 16: 12–14 These three scripture quotations clearly state that there is truth, and that the Holy Spirit will reveal it. The Church All salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his body. – CCC 846. The sole Church of Christ which in the Creed we profess to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic,...subsists in the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the bishops in communion with him. – CCC 870. + "You should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth. – 1 Tim 3: 15 + "If your brother sins (against you), go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that 'every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.' If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. – Matthew 18: 15–18 + "Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me." – Luke 10: 16 From these three scripture quotations we see that the Church is the foundation of truth, the Church has the final say, and that God has given the Church His voice. Peter / The Pope Simon Peter holds the first place among the twelve Apostles. Jesus entrusted a unique mission to him. Because of the faith he confessed Peter will remain the unshakeable rock of the Church. – CCC 552. The office which the Lord confided to Peter alone, as first of the apostles, is permanent and enduring as it is transmitted to his successors (popes). – CCC 862. + "And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." – Matthew 16: 18–19 + "Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers." – Luke 22: 31–32 + "May another take his office." – Acts 1:20 These three scripture quotations clarify that God has established Peter as the authoritative head of his Church on earth (aka, "Vicar of Christ"), that Peter's faith will not fail and that the Church will not be overcome by evil, and that Peter's authoritative position, or office, will be passed down to successors (and here's the historical list). Summary The Holy Spirit leads to all truth, and He guides the Church, which is the pillar and foundation of truth. And because the person who occupies Peter's office (the Pope) is the authoritative head of the Church on earth as establish by Jesus, the only guarantee to have the fullness of truth is to be in union with the successor of Peter (the Pope), because he has been established by God as the head of the Church, which is infallibly guaranteed to be guided by the Holy Spirit into all truth. If you want the fullness of truth and you want to be in the one true Church established by Jesus, you must be Catholic, because Peter's successor is its leader and has been since Jesus established it about 2000 years ago and fulfilled the Old Testament.

The Cursillo movement is something that has had a big impact on me personally, as well as the other men from around South Carolina that attended the men's weekend with me back in April. Cursillo is a movement started by the Catholic Church. It is not new (it goes back to the 1940s) and other denominations now have a Cursillo movement or something similar. In fact, I attended and then staffed something similar to Cursillo when I was in high school that was actually led by Episcopalians and was specific to high school kids of all Christian denominations. What the Cursillo movement stands for is important to the Catholic Church and has a huge impact on who we are as Christians - how we live a more Christ-like life, how we learn about our faith and how we take Christ to others, or evangelize (and while there are many ways to evangelize, I think we often have misconceptions and it’s much more natural than many think). The Cursillo Weekend is a three day experience. Men attend a "Men's Weekend" and women attend a "Women's Weekend". Should you choose to attend Cursillo, what you will personally experience is impossible for me to say. What Cursillo did for me personally is deepen my faith, help me to see ways that I can continue to grow spiritually in the various aspects of my Catholic Faith, and it brought me together with others that share the same strong beliefs. Just like we do when we get together for the Young Adult Scripture Study, we all learn so much from being around others that share our faith. We learn from each other’s experiences, the walks we have all been through in life, and how we have each been drawn closer to God. Just you - by being a part of Cursillo - you will help others you are around during the weekend and afterwards in the same way, even if you don’t realize it at the time. If you desire to continue to grow spiritually, and meet some great people, I encourage you to attend Cursillo. If you do go, one piece of advice I would give is not to have any preconceived notions of what you will get out of the weekend. Just put your concerns and worries aside for 3 days and just be part of it. I have a booklet that does a far better job of talking about Cursillo than I do. I can send it to anyone who expresses an interest, so just let me know. If any of you are interested in attending the upcoming Cursillos for men and women, I have applications. The men's weekend is coming up Sept 9th - 12th. The women’s weekend is September 30th through October 3rd. Generally, you are asked to turn in your application one month before the weekend, to give the team a chance to prepare. Also, to offset the cost of the weekend, food, etc, you will probably be asked for a contribution of $75 at the end of the weekend. If you would like to attend, but are not able to come up with the $75, its ok. Don’t let it stop you from going. Let me know if any of you have questions. Matthew 16: 14–15 For if you will forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your offences. But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your offences. Matthew 18: 15–17 But if your brother shall offend against you, go, and rebuke him between you and him alone. Both GK and Dale are Catholic converts. "The difficulty of explaining "why I am a Catholic" is that there are ten thousand reasons all amounting to one reason: that Catholicism is true. I could fill all my space with separate sentences each beginning with the words, "It is the only thing that . . ." As, for instance, (1) It is the only thing that really prevents a sin from being a secret. (2) It is the only thing in which the superior cannot be superior; in the sense of supercilious. (3) It is the only thing that frees a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age. (4) It is the only thing that talks as if it were the truth; as if it were a real messenger refusing to tamper with a real message. (5) It is the only type of Christianity that really contains every type of man; even the respectable man. Chesterton was born on Campden Hill, in Kensington, London on May 29, 1874. He was educated at St. Paul's School and the Slade School of Art. In 1901, he married Frances Blogg. They made their home in Beaconsfield, a borough of Buckinghamshire. They had no children. Chesterton was one of the most prolific writers of all time. He wrote thousands of essays for the London newspapers on virtually every subject imaginable. He was the author of over one hundred books and wrote contributions for more than 200 more. His writings cover history, philosophy, literary criticism, political and social theories, and Christian apologetics. In addition, he wrote poetry, plays, novels, biographies and even popular detective fiction. (He was the creator of the well known priest-sleuth, Father Brown.) In 1916 he took over the editorship of The New Witness, a weekly journal begun by his brother Cecil, who later died in World War I. Chesterton continued the paper, eventually changing the name to G.K.'s Weekly, until his own death. He also helped found, along with his fellow writer and friend, Hilaire Belloc, the Distributist movement. This broad economic program addressed Chesterton's belief that neither capitalism nor socialism were viable forms of economic theory in practice, as each resulted in the concentration of the vast majority of wealth in the hands of a few elites. Chesterton was noted for his paradoxical style, his endless supply of aphorisms, his great wit, and his great size (he was a large man). Chesterton was as prophetic as he was profound, foreseeing such historical developments as the rise and fall of both Nazism and Communism, and the cultural chaos wrought by modernism. The group for people ages 18 to 35 holds a monthly educational “Why Catholic?” meeting at the Pauline Books and Media Center on King Street. Paul Reetz, 28, and some friends helped form the group about three years ago. He had moved from Minnesota and could not find any Catholic organization for people their age. Reetz and Cody Groeber, 30, began with Bible studies at the center. They now meet for study every other Wednesday, hold the educational meeting and social events. “It provides a place for young adults who want to actively live their faith,” Groeber said. “It’s a serious, inquisitive exploration of our faith.” Read the full article here. Perhaps you've seen one of the twenty plus billboards around Charleston, particularly along I-26, that look like this? If you follow the url on the billboard, www.worldatprayer.org, you're taken to a website hosted by "Family Theater Productions", which is a part of "Holy Cross Family Ministries", which was started over fifty years ago by a Catholic priest, Servant of God, Father Patrick Peyton, whose cause for sainthood formally began in 2001. Here's a little information about the billboards... In 1947, a Los Angeles outdoor advertising company representative was taken by the slogan, "The Family That Prays Together Stays Together ™." He heard in on the "Family Theater" radio series. The company offered to put the slogan on vacant billboards as a public service. The idea caught on with other advertising companies. Over the years messages included "Troubled? Try Prayer!" "Don’t Give Up! Pray. It Works," "God Makes House Calls" and "God Listens," each one followed by "The Family That Prays Together Stays Together ™." These messages have appeared on more 100,000 billboards throughout the country, courtesy of outdoor advertising associations and companies, and have been seen more than 400 million times, according to outdoor advertising associations’ estimates. At last month's "Why Catholic?" lecture, guest speaker, Jason Vaughan wanted to provide further information regarding doctrine and dogma. Here is some clarification. Thanks Jason! From Modern Catholic Dictionary by Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J. DOCTRINE. Any truth taught by the Church as necessary for acceptance by the faithful. The truth may be either formally revealed (as the Real Presence), or a theological conclusion (as the canonization of a saint), or part of the natural law (as the sinfulness of contraception). In any case, what makes it doctrine is that the Church authority teaches that it is to be believed. This teaching may be done either solemnly in ex cathedra pronouncements or ordinarily in the perennial exercise of the Church's magisterium or teaching authority. Dogmas are those doctrines which the Church proposes for belief as formally revealed by God. DOGMA. Doctrine taught by the Church to be believed by all the faithful as part of divine revelation. All dogmas, therefore, are formally revealed truths and promulgated as such by the Church. They are revealed either in Scripture or tradition, either explicitly (as the Incarnation) or implicitly (as the Assumption). Moreover, their acceptance by the faithful must be proposed as necessary for salvation. From the Catechism (2041-2043): The precepts of the Church are set in the context of a moral life bound to and nourished by liturgical life. The obligatory character of these positive laws decreed by the pastoral authorities is meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor: 1. "You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor" Requires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord as well as the principle liturgical feasts honoring the mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints; in the first place, by participating in the Eucharistic celebration, in which the Christian community is gathered, and by resting from those works and activities which could impede such a sanctification of these days. 2. "You shall confess your sins at least once a year" Ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues Baptism's work of conversion and forgiveness. 3. "You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter season" Guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord's Body and Blood in connection with the Paschal feasts, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy. 4. Claim: "You don't need to confess your sins to a priest. You can go straight to God." Response: As a former Baptist minister, I can understand the Protestant objection to confession (they have a different understanding of priesthood). But for a Catholic to say something like this...it's disappointing. I suspect that, human nature being what it is, people just don't like telling other people their sins, and so they come up with justifications for not doing so. The Sacrament of Confession has been with us from the beginning, coming from the words of Christ Himself: "Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.' And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.'" (John 20:21-23) Notice that Jesus gives His apostles the power to forgive sins. Of course, they wouldn't know which sins to forgive if they weren't TOLD what sins were involved. The practice of confession is also evident in the Letter Of James: "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed." (James 5:14-16) It's interesting that nowhere does James (or Jesus) tell us to confess our sins to God alone. Rather, they seem to think that forgiveness comes through some means of public confession. And it's not difficult to understand why. You see, when we sin, we rupture our relationship not just with God, but with His Body, the Church (since all Catholics are interconnected as children of a common Father). So when we apologize, we need to do so to all parties involved -- God AND the Church. Think of it this way. Imagine you walk into a store and steal some of their merchandise. Later, you feel remorse and regret the sinful act. Now, you can pray to God to forgive you for breaking His commandment. But there's still another party involved; you'll need to return the merchandise and make restitution for your action. It's the same way with the God and the Church. Claim: "I don't need to go to Church. As long as I'm a good person, that's all that really matters." Response: This argument is used often, and is pretty disingenuous. When someone says he's a "good person," what he really means is that he's "not a bad person" -- bad people being those who murder, rape, and steal. Most people don't have to extend a lot of effort to avoid these sins, and that's the idea: We want to do the least amount of work necessary just to get us by. Not very Christ-like, is it? But that mentality aside, there's a much more important reason why Catholics go to Church other than just as an exercise in going the extra mile. Mass is the cornerstone of our faith life because of what lies at its heart: the Eucharist. It's the source of all life for Catholics, who believe that bread and wine become the real body and blood of Christ. It's not just a symbol of God, but God made physically present to us in a way we don't experience through prayer alone. Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:53-54). We're honoring Jesus' command and trusting in that promise every time we go to Mass. What's more, the Eucharist -- along with all the other Sacraments -- is only available to those in the Church. As members of the Church, Christ's visible body here on earth, our lives are intimately tied up with the lives of others in that Church. Our personal relationship with God is vital, but we also have a responsibility to live as faithful members of Christ's body. Claim: "The Old and New Testaments contradict one another in numerous places. If an omnipotent God inspired the Bible, He would never have allowed these errors." Response: This is a common claim, one found all over the internet (especially on atheist and free-thought websites). An article on the American Atheists website notes that "What is incredible about the Bible is not its divine authorship; it's that such a concoction of contradictory nonsense could be believed by anyone to have been written by an omniscient God." Such a statement is generally followed by a list of Biblical "contradictions." However, claims of contradictions make a few simple errors. For example, critics fail to read the various books of the Bible in line with the genre in which they were written. The Bible is, after all, a collection of several kinds of writing...history, theology, poetry, apocalyptic material, etc. If we try to read these books in the same wooden way in which we approach a modern newspaper, we're going to be awfully confused. And the list of Bible "contradictions" bears this out. Take, for example, the first item on the American Atheist's list: "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." Exodus 20:8 Versus... "One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind." Romans 14:5 There! the atheist cries, A clear contradiction. But what the critic neglects to mention is something every Christian knows: When Christ instituted the New Covenant, the ceremonial requirements of the Old Covenant were fulfilled (and passed away). And so it makes perfect sense that Old Testament ceremonial rules would no longer stand for the people of the New Covenant. If the critic had understood this simple tenet of Christianity, he wouldn't have fallen into so basic an error. The next item on the American Atheist list is similarly flawed: "...the earth abideth for ever." Ecclesiastes 1:4 Versus... "...the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." So, the Old Testament claims that the earth will last forever, while the New says it will eventually be destroyed. How do we harmonize these? Actually, it's pretty easy, and it again comes from understanding the genre in which these two books were written. Ecclesiastes, for example, contrasts secular and religious worldviews -- and most of it is written from a secular viewpoint. That's why we find lines like, "Bread is made for laughter, and wine gladdens life, and money answers everything." (Ecclesiastes 10:19) However, at the end of the book, the writer throws us a twist, dispensing with all the "wisdom" he'd offered and telling us to "Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man." (12:13) If a reader stops before the end, he'll be as confused as the critic at American Atheists. However, since the viewpoint that gave birth to the notion of an eternal earth is rejected in the last lines of the book, there's obviously no contradiction with what was later revealed in the New Testament. (And this is just one way to answer this alleged discrepancy.) The other "contradictions" between the Old and New Testaments can be answered similarly. Almost to an item, the critics who use them confuse context, ignore genre, and refuse to allow room for reasonable interpretation. No thinking Christian should be disturbed by these lists. To refute the many claims of supposed biblical contradictions in more depth. Claim: "Christianity is no better than any other faith. All religions lead to God." Response: If you haven't heard this one a dozen times, you don't get out much. Sadly enough, the person making this claim is often himself a Christian (at least, in name). The problems with this view are pretty straightforward. Christianity makes a series of claims about God and man: That Jesus of Nazareth was God Himself, and that he died and was resurrected -- all so that we might be free from our sins. Every other religion in the world denies each of these points. So, if Christianity is correct, then it speaks a vital truth to the world -- a truth that all other religions reject. This alone makes Christianity unique. But it doesn't end there. Recall Jesus' statement in John's Gospel: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me." In Christianity, we have God's full revelation to humanity. It's true that all religions contain some measure of truth -- the amount varying with the religion. Nevertheless, if we earnestly want to follow and worship God, shouldn't we do it in the way He prescribed? Claim: "There's no such thing as absolute truth. What's true for you may not be true for me." Response: People use this argument a lot when they disagree with a statement and have no other way to support their idea. After all, if nothing is true for everyone, then they can believe whatever they want and there's nothing you can say to make them change their minds. But look at that statement again: "There's no such thing as absolute truth." Isn't that, in itself, a statement that's being made absolutely? In other words, it applies some rule or standard to everyone across the board -- exactly what the relativists say is impossible. They have undone their own argument simply by stating their case. The other problem with this statement is that no relativist actually believes it. If someone said to you, "There is no absolute truth," and you punched him in the stomach, he'd probably get upset. But by his own creed, he'd have to accept that while punching someone in the stomach may be wrong for him, it might not be wrong for you. This is when they'll come back with an amendment to the original statement by saying, "As long as you're not hurting others, you're free to do and believe what you like." But this is an arbitrary distinction (as well as another absolute statement). Who says I can't hurt others? What constitutes "hurt"? Where does this rule come from? If this statement is made based on personal preference, it means nothing for anyone else. "Do no harm" is in itself an appeal to something greater -- a sort of universal dignity for the human person. But again, the question is where does this dignity come from? As you can see, the further you delve into these questions, the closer you come to understanding that our concepts of right and truth are not arbitrary but are based in some greater, universal truth outside ourselves -- a truth written in the very nature of our being. Age? 23 Where are you from originally? Ada, Michigan Where did you attend college? College of Charleston What do you currently do day to day? I work as a nanny taking care of two precious babies. What do you do for fun and recreation? Travel, go to the beach, kayak, SCUBA dive, fish, sail, hike, camp, read, listen to music, cook, speak French. Favorite books? The Count of Monte Cristo, Poisonwood Bible, Writings of St. Thérèse, Mere Christianity Favorite Movie? Indiana Jones, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings, Life is Beautiful, Singing in the Rain Were you born Catholic? If not, how did you become Catholic? A little over two years ago I first became intrigued by Catholicism. My father is a Lutheran pastor and I am grateful for my strong Christian upbringing that helped develop my faith. However, in college I realized that I was still operating out of the theology of my parents and I felt the need to decide on my own exactly what "version" of Christianity I believed. What started as a search for "the right church for me" became more of a quest for truth. Through some conversations with a Catholic friend I was surprised to learn that many of my preconceived ideas of the Catholic faith were in fact misconceptions. I was almost embarassed that I had never thought to learn more about the Catholic church, the very first Christian church. I started reading a lot, asking questions of many different people, and praying to be led to the truth. By God's grace, He opened my heart and my mind to honestly consider Catholic beliefs that seemed strange because they were foreign to me. As I learned about the Eucharist I was attracted to the idea of Christ's Real Presence and found myself wanting it to be true like I wanted fairy tales to be true when I was little. I made a sort of "deal" with God. If He could convice me that He is truly present in the Eucharist and that the only place I could receive Him is in a Catholic Church then I would become Catholic even without understanding everything else. In the end I had to step out in faith before He gave me total certainty in my decision, but as I walked forward to receive Jesus' Body and Blood for the first time at the Easter Vigil Mass I knew that it was really Him I would be receiving and that He had been eagerly anticipating this moment-- that my whole life had been preparing me for this divine encounter. I have never looked back. Favorite or Patron Saint? Saint Thérèse de Lisieux Favorite thing about being Catholic? Obvious answer is receiving Christ in the Eucharist, but another one of my favorite things is that I can walk into a Catholic church anywhere in the world and feel at home. When you're alone in a foreign country it is comforting. What do you like about being a part of the young adult group? I like being able to mutually encourage one another when we come together. I find myself being inspired and rejuvenated by hearing or seeing someone else's excitement about their faith. As a new feature to the young adult blog, we will occasionally be featuring and interviewing its members. The young adult group is comprised of many exceptional and interesting people who have come to Charleston from all over the country. Some are cradle Catholics, others are recent converts. It can be hard to meet people as you're filing out of church on Sunday. We don't socialize inside the church out of reverence for Jesus, who is present in the tabernacle, and out of respect for those praying, and there isn't a social hall that everyone gathers at regularly after Mass. So, if you don't run into someone on the steps of the church or on the way to your car, you may come and go to church every week, sadly, without ever meeting your fellow parishioners. Hopefully by getting to know people through this blog feature we can start socially engaging our Catholic peers more. Did you know there are more than 100 young adults between 18 and 35 who go to the Cathedral and are on the young adult emailing list? Don't be afraid to say hello to someone. We are one body in Christ, let us live like it.

Paintball this Saturday!

It's time for Paintball! On March 28th, YAM will be hosting hosting an inter-group paintball event at Paintball Charleston. YAM is reserving a slot for the full day (9-4) so that everyone is playing with friends and others from the area parish groups. If you've never played before this would be great opportunity to try it out since we will be playing among our own groups only. This is an energetic, social outdoor event that anyone can be involved in! We ask that people bring about $40 in cash that will cover paintball and c02, but given turnout, we expect the total cost will be lower (somewhere between $20-$40). Lunch will probably be easiest for everyone if people brown bags. If you have friends you'd like to join us for that day, feel free to ask them to come along as well. Please let myself or David Childress know if you plan on arriving after 9:00 AM, so we can plan accordingly. Directions Paintball Charleston 7100 Cross County Rd Charleston, SC 29418 843-552-1115 "What are paintball games like?" Briefly, there are two teams that start at the opposite end of outdoor large, obstacle-filled fields. The basic game is to shoot your team's opponents with paintball guns. Generally, after being hit with a paintball once in a round, that person is "out" until the next game starts. In my experience games can last 15 minutes or so. Sometimes there are goals for each team, such as Capture-the-Flag. You can expect to be physically active during the games, and having fun coordinating with your teammates trying to accomplish your team's goals. "How should I dress?" First, all paintballs do wash out of clothing -- they are water soluble and non-toxic. We recommend wearing layered clothing, particularly long sleeves and jeans to help dampen the impact of any paintballs. The less bare-skin exposed legs/arms are the more enjoyable the game will be in case you are hit there. Expect to get somewhat dirty, as this is an outdoor event. "Do I have to stay the whole day?" You can stay as long as you like (until 4PM), or leave earlier if you like. We do ask that if you plan on arriving later than 9AM that you let myself or David Childress know so we can plan accordingly. "Can I arrive after 9:00 AM?" Yes, as you can join in as soon as the next game starts (they likely last about 10-20 minuttes apiece). Please let David or myself know if you plan on arriving after 9:00, though. "What are lunch plans?" You can either bring your own lunch, or dine out during lunch time. It might be a great day to have a small picnic! "Does it hurt?" I've had a few people ask me if paintball hurts, and I would like to clear up some ideas so that everyone can fully enjoy the day. First of all, everyone wears a mask that protects your face and neck. Second, we're planning this in a cooler month so that people can wear something baggy clothes like a t-shirt with a sweatshirt on top and jeans outdoors, which does a lot to soften the paintball's impact (which are basically gelatin-filled capsules). To get an idea of what a paintball impact might feel like, flick your fingernail against your bare skin. Also, we will be using rental guns, which often are not fully "tweaked", so their muzzle velocity (power) will be even less

Does that obedience enslave or free you? 4. 6:20-23 If the reward of obedience to God is holiness, you should b able to see some sign of it when you look back on your life. What indications do you see that sin has less of a hold on you now than it used to? What are your spiritual interests?

As many of you know there is a genocide taking place in front of us. Abortion is not just the killing of a human being, it is also the denial of the civil rights that the forefathers of this country so valiantly fought for and that sometimes we take for granted. So far, since abortion has been legal in the United States, there have been at least 50 million people terminated not because they were dangers to their mothers or had terrible diseases, but because it is legal to do so. This is a time that requires Catholics to step up and lead in this civil rights movement to give rights back to those who can not speak for themselves. We only need to show our support.

40 days for life is an event geared to show support for all the victims of abortion with prayer and witness to those who want to be helped. There is no more glory in charging armed into a battlefield than in standing up against the evil of abortion with just a rosary. The Cathedral Young Adults will be praying at the abortion clinic every Saturday, starting on February 28th, throughout Lent from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. You do not have to be there for the whole shift, but I encourage you to come for just one hour of the Lenten season. May God Almighty bless you and comfort the hearts of those afflicted. "Remember you are dust, and unto dust you shall return." This Wednesday, February 25th, is Ash Wednesday, the official beginning of Lent. The ashes we receive as an exterior sacramental on our foreheads are meant to reflect our inward repentance and desire for conversion. Ashes have long been a symbol of our sorrow for our sins and the recognition of God as greater than ourselves. In Genesis 18:27, Abraham speaks to the Lord, "I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes." In the book of Esther, Mordecai, Esther and the Jewish people sit in sackcloth and ashes, imploring the Lord’s mercy. Job in 42:6 vividly repents, "Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes." When the Prophet Daniel desired to understand a message from the Lord, he turned to Him saying, "I turned to the Lord God, pleading in earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes." Blessed ashes will be distributed during Holy Mass: 7am; 12:05pm; and 5:30pm.

Protect Catholic Radio

Over the past several months many press stories and radio programs have been dedicated to the threat to freedom of speech by a federal law re-instituting the Fairness Doctrine. The fundamental thrust of this proposed law would mandate opposing points of view be aired on all radio stations covering an issue, i.e., if a station runs a program concerning the sanctity of marriage as an institution of man and woman, it would have to run the opposing view. If adopted, such a law would obviously wreak havoc on Catholic broadcasters. Fortunately, all indications are that this proposal will not find its way into law. A much more insidious proposal, however, likely will, "Localism". While most broadcasters and civil libertarians have focused on the detrimental effects of the Fairness Doctrine, a back door effort has been underway.
